Well its been a while since my last post been busy guiding the Sandy River.
We are having good success on the Sandy but having trouble landing fish.
Last week we finally landed a few for photos both beautiful Wild Hen's.
The Sandy's water levels have been very steady last week and looks good for this week.

Well the Sandy River went from to low to fish or float to 18,000+.

I was hoping for some rain to start our winter season on the Sandy but I think this is a little to much.

Well I guess I will tie more flies and wait for it to drop.

WHEN YOU THINK ALL HOPE IS LOST

This is one of those fishing stories that ends with a happy ending. On our last camp trip on the John Day I was Guiding for Marty Sheppard of Little Creek Outfitters we had some great fishing. On day 3 of a 5 day trip camp trip one of my clients was having a epic day, I think he hooked 7 or 8 fish. The last fish of the day is where the story begins. Bob was fishing through this big boulder run, I was standing high on the bank watching the fly, I just told Bob he was getting to good area with a big pile of rocks I could see from my high vantage point. The fly finally reach the rocks and wham fish on, the fish hit hard and ran directly toward the rocks on the far bank. Before we knew it the fish was wrapped up in the rocks.
I told Bob to move down stream to see if we could get it off the rocks, we tried all the tricks none of them worked. I figured the fish was gone by now and some how I needed to get to the other side and untangle this mess. So I walked up stream to the raft and rowed across to get the line back, before I untangled the line I thought I would take a picture to show Bob how we had no chance of landing this fish. After the photos I started to untangle the line from the rocks when I got to the leader I noticed the steelhead was still on the end. I have the raft in one hand and pile of line around me with a big steelhead on the other end. So I yell to Bob to strip line in the fish is still on and about ready to take off again.
Bob might say I was yelling at the top of my lungs Strip Bob, Strip faster, Strip, Strip, F ing Strip.
Bob finally reconnected to the fish and the fight was back on, I rowed across and help land the biggest fish I saw all season. I have been guided for over 20yrs and have seen this happen before but it never ends well, it fills good to have one of those crazy stories to end with photos of the fish.

DESCHUTES STEELHEAD REPORT OCTOBER

Well we are getting to the end of Oct and fishing has been good the last few days with alot of big fish.
Been out the last 12 days and been getting fish everyday on floating lines and dark natural flies.
Flies that have been working well are Steelhead Coachman #4, Doc Spratley #6, Lady Caroline #4
I think the fish by now have seen every purple fly available so try dark and drabby.
If the weather stays good the fishing should stay good till mid November.
So get out there and catch some!!

Moving camp Hillbilly style

Its hard to believe that Sept is already over, we just finished are last camp trip for the year.
Sept had some tough steelhead weather with temps in the Mid 90's, a lot of trips felt more like Aug.
We still had a great time with all our customers and even found a few fish.
Now it day trips through the first of November.

Its been a while since my last post , steelhead season on the Deschutes is in full swing and have been guiding the last 3 weeks solid.
Fishing has been good when the weather is not to hot, on the hotter days the mornings have been best.
My best flies so far have been #6 Night Dancer, #6 Muddler, #4 Red Neck Revenge, The darker more natural patterns seem to be better right now.
We have also caught a few in the mid-day with sink-tips and a small Black and Blue Tandem Tube.
With some cooler weather fishing should get even better.

JOHN DAY BASS

On Friday I decided to take my kids over to the John day for some fun and catch some bass. The river was still over 700cfs for Aug that is very high but still good to catch lots of bass.
The kids used Black Wolleybuggers all day and caught about 40 or 50 bass.
I was fishing poppers and Foam Bugs and catching a few.
If you have never fished the John Day its a great place for the family trip and even catch a few fish.

Native Fish Society Trip

August 1st -2nd this year Silvey's Flyfishing and John Hazel and Company did our Annual Donated trip on the Deschutes for steelhead to raise money for the Native Fish Society.
Its a great event we have done for over 10yrs.
Thanks to everyone for coming to Help Native fish.
Paul got this Hatchery steelhead yesterday on the trip.

Well its been a while since I posted been busy guiding for Trout and Steelhead
The Trout fishing has been good with big Caddis hatches and Aquatic Moths
Steelhead are starting to show up in better numbers in the lower river but the water temps have been
a little warm to have great fishing yet.
So far we have hooked 5 steelhead trout fishing and 1 steelhead on the swing!
Out of the 5 on trout gear we only landed 1 but its tough to land them on 5x and size #16 caddis pupae.

With some cooler weather and water the steelhead fishing should get better

CADDIS TIME

Well its been a little while since I posted anything been busy guiding the last few weeks.
The river is getting to more of its normal level and the fish are keying on the caddis hatches.
Are best flies were a Tan Elk Hair Dry and either a Silvey's Tan Caddis Pupae #16 or a Silvey's Diving Caddis # 16 for droppers.
Some areas the fish are also keying on Dead or Spent caddis so make sure you have a few of your best low riding caddis to fish to the rises.
There are still some Mayfly hatches mainly PMD's
There will also be alot of Aquatic Moths in the Lower River in the next few weeks, a Cream Colored Elk Hair works great or you can swing a Aquatic Moth pupae in the evening and get some great takes.

The trout fishing on the Deschutes has been great since the water went down, it went up a little last week but didn't slow the the dryfly action to bad.
There are still a few Golden Stones around and we are still catching fish on the Chubby in the afternoon.
We had great luck on Little Yellow Sally adult #14 with a Bead Head Mayfly Nymphs #16 droppers.
The Caddis are starting to show in Big Numbers so make sure to try some caddis patterns during the day.
On days with some cloud cover we also have had some huge Mayfly hatches (PMD or PED)
We have been fishing the Maupin Area or Below Sherars Falls

Big thunderstorm hit on Wed below Maupin

The Stonefly hatch is still going on around Maupin but after the next warm weather we have it will be over in the Maupin Area. No worries there are plenty of other hatches to keep fishing dries.
Today we had Stoneflies,Green Drakes,PMD,PED,Blue Winged Olives,Caddis all hatching through out the day.
The best action was fishing a #8 Chubby with a Bead Head PMD Nymph for a dropper.
The Water is in great shape, So get out there and catch some of those great Redsides.

High Water on the Deschutes

This week started out with good fishing, catching some nice fish on the big dries.
Late on Monday we had a big thunder storm dump on us and eventually rained enough to bring the
river up where it is tough to find slow enough water to fish.
The Bugs are flying but the water needs to come down some before fishing gets better.

When it gets below 6,000 cfs it should go crazy!

Chubby getting smashed on the Deschutes

Its that time of year again, the Stonefly hatch on the Deschutes River will start soon!
The water is coming down finally to a great level.
Last year the HOT fly was Idylwilde's Chubby Chernoybl so make sure you have plenty before you head to the river.

Hopefully this dead 36" Wild Buck was able to spawn.

The winter steelhead run is finally coming to a end but there are still a few bright winters around.

The summer run is later this year with all the cold weather but this week we hooked are first summer

but it was tough to land jumping as soon as it was hooked.

The past few weeks it has been tough to hit the Sandy river with fishable water levels.
There have been 1 or 2 days of good fishing then the river would rise and get muddy.
The river is in good shape but the water is rising again today.
April is one of my favorite months to fish, warmer weather with chrome hot wild fish!

This week started out slow but ended very well. This time of year it is a mixed bag of fish, there some big bright fish still coming in and fish heading back out. Still a great time of year to flyfish the Sandy.

WIND STORM ON SUNDAY

Sunday was a good and bad, fishing was good we landed a nice wild hen and had several other opportunities.
On the way back to Sandy after a great day on the river we ran straight into a mini tornado, with trees and limbs breaking all around us. As I was driving through this mess a limb landed just in front of us, with no way to dodge the limb. We drove through not knowing it had speared my radiator until we got back to town. So not a great way to end the day

STEELHEAD FOG

Was Out guiding on Wed on the Sandy river we found a few fish. The fog hung around all day with the warm air temps. It made the river look perfect all day.
The next day the river went out with all the rain.

Spent a few days with the guys from Trout Unlimited TV on the Sandy trying to get a steelhead on the
swing. It took two days of shooting but we finally got one on film from start to finish.

ICE WATER

My Boat was covered in Ice all day

I pulled this ice off a rock on shore

The ice was so clear I decided to take a photo through the ice

I cancelled most of my trips when the snow and cold temps hit, but some people still want to go.
So we went out today and braved the freezing temps to see if we can find any steelhead.
The water temp was around 35 degrees, probably the hardest temp to catch anything.
We still had a great time any way.
Pray for some RAIN!!!!!!!!

GOOD FISHING LAST WEEK

I guided 6 straight days last week with perfect weather and water temps. We found some fish almost everyday.
The best fly was a Black and Blue Tanden Tube Fly or a Orange and Red Tandem Tube Fly fished with 12ft of T-11.
Thanks to everyone who fished with me last week, that was alot of fun watching these wild fish hit the fly and make some great jumps and runs.

TYING FLIES

When I am not guiding this is where you can find me every evening tying flies.
I am either restocking my boxes for my next guide trip or working on a new pattern for Idylwilde Flies.
I tie every fly for all of my guide trips, its well over a couple 100 doz flies a year.
When I tied commerically as a teenager I would tie 900-1,200 doz a summer.

I was out guiding on the Sandy river last week, the weather was perfect. We had chances everyday but could not connect with any fish for more then a head shake. The water was rising a little each day we were out, which can make steelhead tougher to catch. The river is on the rise today but when it settles and starts to drop it should be good.
So get out there and swing some flies!

WINTER STEELHEAD SEASON

I was out guiding on the Sandy River yesterday for my first winter steelhead trip of the year.
The water was rising but still fishable, we had several grabs and landed this HOT Wild steelhead.
This wild fish took about middle of the swing then took off about 100 yds down river and stayed that
far away for most of the fight.
It was a epic battle and fish!

The last few weeks have been good when White River has been clean, The steelhead are spread out through the 100 miles of the Deschutes.

The best flies have been darker more natural patterns, My favorite are a Night Dancer or a Doc Spratley but don't forget there are alot of Fall Caddis around and steelhead also love them.

Fishing should stay good through Oct and first of Nov with some big Wild Steelhead showing up this year.

Fishing this last week was a little slower with all the rain and the river rising and also throw in White river putting in some mud.

With no rain in the forecast everything should settle back down and fishing should improve with clear water.

This last week on the Deschutes was interesting with good fishing and all the fires in Wasco County and on the Deschutes.

I just got off the river on Thursday late afternoon and was heading home, when my cell phone rang. There was a fire near my house heading my way, By the time I got home the whole area was on fire. We were lucky the wind kept the fire away from my house.

Most of my 160 acres was burnt except for around my house, so for the last few days we have been putting out small fires on my property.

I want to say thanks to the local Volunteer Fire Dept and a few Great neighbors that came to help us.

Hopefully things will settle down now and I can get back to just guiding.

TRAFFIC ON HWY 216

On my way home from guiding yesterday there were two objects running down the road.

At first I thought they were Coyotes from a distance but as soon as I got closer I couldn't believe what I was seeing 2 Badgers fighting in the middle of Hwy 216.

When I stopped they moved towards my truck, I grabbed my camera as they moved through the fence. They ran off in different directions and the fight was over.

FUN PART OF BEING A GUIDE

My favorite part of being a fishing guide is meeting new people and sharing a sport I love.

I took Rob and Cole on a 3 day camp trip this year on the lower Deschutes and had a great time taking them.

The last time I saw them was in June of 1999, it was great to see they remembered the spots we fished 11yrs ago.

Here is some photos they sent of both trips.

One thing I noticed is that I had a lot more hair in 1999.

TROUT AND STEELHEAD ON THE DESCHUTES RIVER

July on the Deschutes can be a great time of year, with both trout and steelhead to chase.

The last few trips have been camp trips from Mack's Canyon to Heritage Landing fishing for trout and steelhead.

There are a few steelhead around but with the warmer weather the water temps are rising and making it tougher to catch them.

There has been some great dry fly fishing in the evening with all the caddis hatches.

My best comb for trout have been a #16 Tan Body Elk Hair Caddis with a #16 Silvey's Bead head Caddis Pupa Dropper.

The Weather is key this time of year, if the temps are in the 80's or lower the fishing is good.

If we get temps in the mid 90's or higher fishing becomes tough in the Lower Deschutes with the warm water.

GUIDE VACATION ON THE JOHN DAY

Just got home from 7 days of what I call guide vacation on the John Day River. I usually do a few trips with Little Creek Outfitters every year to break up my season.

Its alot different for a Deschutes River Trout and Steelhead guide to fish out of a boat all day.

The fishing was great watching the customers catching 100+ Bass on Poppers Per day.

GOT CADDIS ?

The Stonefly hatch is finally done in the Maupin area the fish will still hit the big bugs but they will also refuse it more often.

The last few days the best dries have been Little Yellow Sally's, Parachute Caddis, Elk Hair Caddis and Parachute PMD's.

The best nymph's are Bead Head Caddis Pupae or Diving Caddis fished in the pocket water.

The Deschutes is back into shape and still fishing great. In the Maupin area there are still a few Golden Stones and yes they are still eating Chubby.

My best flies the last few days have been a Golden Chubby #6 with a Silvey's beadhead Caddis #14 dropper or a Silvey's Diving Caddis#14 dropper.

There has also been some great May fly Hatches, fishing a PMD parachute #16 or a PED soft hackle #12 have also been good producers.

The big Caddis hatches are also starting with the warmer weather, #14 Elk Hair tan body is a good choice.

DESCHUTES GUIDE GOES LAKE FISHING

With all the Rain this last week the Deschutes finally got to high to fish.

So what can you do when all the rivers are to high, you go lake fishing!

Here are some shots from the lake we fished.

Before the water got to high the fishing was AWESOME,I would guess by Wed or Thur the river should be down enough to fish.

There are still Golden Stones in the grass in Maupin so Chubby should still work

The mayfly hatches have been crazy with the cloudy weather, PED, PMD, Green Drakes.

So now its a waiting game till the end of the week.

Had a great Trout trip Today on the Deschutes River around the Maupin Area.

There are a lot of Salmonflies out in the grass with a few flying but still a week or more from the main hatch.

We had are best luck fishing with #6 Orange Stimulator and a Tungsten Bead Head #16 Black

I was surprised how many big fish came to the Stimulator, but we also had fish trying to eat our indicator.

Its to early to say there eating the big bugs, but it can work great as a strike indicator that fish will eat.

SANDY RIVER SUMMER STEELHEAD

Today we hooked 6 steelhead and landed these 2 chrome bright summers. In the Morning the weather felt like it was mid- January, its hard to believe its May after such a mild winter.

When I drove back home over Mt Hood I had to put the truck into 4wd, I didn't use 4wd most of the winter.

That is one interesting thing about fishing in Oregon in early to late spring the weather can be 70 degrees one week and mid 40's the next.

People always ask what type of clothing to bring on a Spring Trip on the Sandy, my reply is bring it all.

Hats, Gloves, Rain Coat, Sun Screen, Sun Glasses, Ski Goggles, Bermuda Shorts, etc.

OK maybe not the shorts.

The last couple of seasons we have caught a summer steelhead on the Sandy river the first week of March. This year with the low water the fish are running a little later then normal.

This last week we finally landed a summer steelhead, they usually aren't the biggest fish but man are they HOT!!!

Since I have shown how to tie my favorite Trout and Winter steelhead patterns I thought I would add my best Deschutes summer steelhead fly.

CRAZY WEATHER

The last few weeks has been some crazy weather.

Out fishing last week in 60 degree weather.

Yesterday morning it snowed hard for about 20 minutes.

I guess its Spring in Oregon if you don't like the weather just wait a few minutes it will change.

With all the crazy weather we did manage to hook and land this chrome Wild Hen on a Red Tandem Tube Fly.

MARCH TROUT FISHING

With the mild weather this week and overcast days it is perfect weather for some dryfly action on the Deschutes River. The Blue wing olive hatch starts around noon to 1:00 pm and ends about 3:00pm.
My best combination to use during the hatch is a parachute Blue Winged Olive in size #16 or 18

with a Baetis Emerger dropper size #18 fished just below the surface.

The Hatch will get better through March and also change to bigger Mayflies like March Browns.

Next time your out fishing this winter for steelhead don't forget to try a big red fly.

Over the years it has become a good color for me even in low clear water.

Make sure you have a good grip on your rod because they can hit this fly very aggressively.

BIG RED gets the job done on the Sandy river.

This is one of my best patterns on the Deschutes River during the summer months when we have our big caddis hatches. You can fish this fly many different ways but my favorite is fished as a dropper under a dry fly.

So if you are tying this winter to get your trout fly box ready for summer fishing give this fly a try.

Here are few shots from the Sandy river this week.

The water is getting low and very clear but we managed to hook a nice hatchery fish that came off next to shore.
This Ouzel decided to land on my boat and watch everyone fish for a few minutes.

Over the years I have tried numerous times to get what I think is the hardest photo to get, a steelhead jumping.

Last year on the Deschutes I was able to get 3 different shots of steelhead going airborne.

Had one of my favorite customers out on the Sandy river Yesterday with no love from the Steelhead gods.

The river came up just a little and turned the bite off but there was plenty of signs they were around by rolling in about every run we fished.

The Sandy river has been producing some great fish this year.

The Sandy season usually starts in December and fishes great through May.

HOW TO TIE AND RIG A TANDEM TUBE FLY

There has been several people that have emailed me lately to show how I tie and rig a Tandem Tube Fly.

If you have never seen this fly before here is a quick explanation on why its such a great fly.

First as you will see it is fairly fast and easy to tie

The key to it is the 2 different tubes, the front tube is small and stops on the Mono knot and the rear tube is large and slides over the knot.

So you get a great Articulated fly that is very easy to cast and tie.

With all the varieties of colors of Rabbit, Marabou, Hackle and Cones the combinations are endless.

Rainbow Flashabou

Kingfisher Blue Schapplen

The cone is regular cone not a tube cone

Since most of the rivers are once again to high to fish I wanted to see which would you prefer to fish for and catch.

I personally love to catch any steelhead on a fly but I think winter fish are on top of my list.

Winter Steelhead are usually bigger and a lot tougher with the changing water levels and water temps.

SPEY LINES

The best way to pick a spey line for your two handed rod is try to get out on the water and try several different lines and grain weights.

Just because somebody told you that was the line to buy for that rod doesn't make it the best and only line to use.

Alot of times when I am out guiding , I am standing watching my client cast and thinking that new line they just bought is not the right line for them.

Then its my job to some how nicely tell them that line sucks and then set them up with a better line. It doesn't mean they are instantly throwing 90ft cast just because I gave them the line I like on that rod. When you have the proper line on it, the rod should be easy to cast with little to no effort. Anybody that has done enough steelhead fishing knows it can be long day of casting before you even get a grab.

There is some great resources online that will give you great info on what rod you might have and what lines and grain weights that work best.

Its still a good idea to go to a fly shop and see if they will let you demo some lines on the water.

For new spey casters it can be difficult to know if the line they have is right, until they have a better understanding how a spey cast works.

Here are some sites to check out if you think the line you have is not the right line.

Pay close attention to the grain weight of the line and the length of the head.

Fished below Maupin for a few hours and was surprised how much snow there was down on the river.

Landed a big hatchery hen on my 5wt spey rod.
